Julie Reier, born in Nepal in 1982, is a music composer and pianist of German origin, who now lives and creates in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Graduated with distinction as a classical pianist at the Conservatorio de Música on the Balearic Island of Mallorca, she completed a Professional Certificate Program about film scoring, music composition and orchestration at Berklee College of Music while she took part in multiple workshops for audiovisual media. She has won several awards and nominations worldwide, such as the Jerry Goldsmith Award for the delicate short “Stand With Sanju” and Best Film Score for the short “NOTHING CO” at Shorts In-Fest, Spain. She now works as a composer and producer for Film, TV and Videogames at her studio Zumbakamera, with clients all around the world. Some of her recent credits include the Catalan Feature Comedy “A thousand Things I Would Do For You” and the Sundance/Skoll ‘Stories of Change’ Film, “Do No Harm”.
To Julie, music is not only an adornment for the visual but can be a powerful tool and an indirect mode of storytelling. That’s why she bases her music on a delicate study of the emotional and narrative background when composing for picture. Thanks to her skills as a multi-instrumentalist and to her affection for timbral experimentation, her work is often influenced and inspired by the use of inventive and unconventional instruments and instrumentations, to give birth to a fresh and unique sound.
Nacida en 1982 en Nepal de padres alemanes, Julie Reier es una compositora y pianista que desde el 2007 reside y crea en Palma de Mallorca, España. Realiza su carrera superior como pianista en el Conservatorio de Música de las Islas Baleares y a continuación un posgrado en Composición de Música Cinematográfica en el Berklee College of Music en los EEUU, mientras participa en diferentes talleres de composición en el sector audiovisual. Actualmente se dedica de forma autónoma a la composición musical para diferentes tipos de producción, ya sean trabajos por encargo, colaboraciones o proyectos personales.
Para su música en el audiovisual, realiza un detenido análisis del discurso narrativo y emocional de la imagen, con el fin de hacer de la música algo más que un mero adorno de la imagen: una herramienta poderosa y un modo indirecto de contar historias. Además, gracias a su habilidad para interpretar varios instrumentos y a su gusto por la experimentación tímbrica, su trabajo se ve enriquecido con el uso de instrumentos e instrumentaciones poco convencionales, con el objetivo de conferir a su música un sonido propio, fresco y original.
1982 in Nepal als Tochter deutscher Eltern geboren, lebt und arbeitet Julie Reier seit 2007 als Komponistin und Pianistin in Palma de Mallorca, Spanien. Musik war schon in ihren Kinder- und Jugendjahren ein stetiger Wegbegleiter, sie erhielt eine fundierte Ausbildung in Klavier und Geige und spielte in diversen Orchestern und Kammermusikgruppen. Am Conservatorio de Música de las Islas Baleares auf Mallorca absolvierte sie ein Musikstudium mit Hauptfach Klavier, anschliessend ein Aufbaustudium in Film Scoring and Music Composition am Berklee College of Music in den USA. Es folgten diverse Workshops im audiovisuellen Bereich. Derzeit arbeitet sie als Freelance Komponistin für verschiedene Produktionen, Auftragsarbeiten, Kollaborationen sowie an persönlichen Projekten.
Eine einfühlsame Auseinandersetzung mit dem emotionalen sowie einem erzählerischen Kontext ist die Basis ihrer audiovisuellen Kompositionen. Auf diese Weise ist ihre Musik nicht nur Verzierung des Visuellen, sondern wird zu einem bedeutenden Werkzeug für eine indirekte Art des Geschichtenerzählens. Ihre Vorliebe für unkonventionelle Instrumente und Klangexperimente sowie ihre Fertigkeiten als Instrumentalistin sind oft Inspiration für ihr künstlerisches Schaffen, immer mit dem Ziel, einen frischen und originellen Klang zu erschaffen.
